A valuation is not an accurate assessment of the diamond itself.
Some jewellers will use an inflated valuation to lead the customer to believe he or she is getting a really good deal when really the jewellery is, in fact, fairly priced. A valuation significantly higher than the selling price can only be serving the interests of the seller.
Certified diamonds allow you to compare prices without unknowingly sacrificing quality
Be sure you get a proper diamond grading report or certificate.
Make sure the certificate is from an independent and recognised laboratory. Grading laboratories do not sell diamonds. That would be a significant conflict of interest. Visit www.independentlycertifieddiamonds.com for more advice on laboratories.
Check if the laboratory is endorsed or accredited by respected local and international organizations or associations
Price comparisons between jewellers can only be made if you are comparing certified diamonds
Be cautious of "sales" which appear to be genuine but are nothing more than a large discount of an even larger exaggerated price.
How can you be sure the diamond you buy is the one on the certificate? Easy ask for your diamond to be laser inscribed with the certificate number. Most Internationally recognised laboratories will offer laser inscription services. Laser inscription is minute writing, not visible to the naked eye, on the girdle of the diamond. The safest laser is a cold laser system, guaranteed not to damage the diamond, and has no effect on the purity.
